SKALVIJA Cinema Center is a small (1 screen and 88 seats) art-house cinema situated in central Vilnius. Small but cosy, it is well known amongst film lovers for its distinctive repertoire. The programming focuses on non-commercial European and World cinema, both classics and recent film. SKALVIJA is the major venue for cinematic events – festivals, meetings with filmmakers, retrospectives, special screenings. Distribution of European film is another important activity at SKALVIJA. The Cinema Center has recently distributed “Entre Les Murs” (dir. Laurent Cantet, France, 2008), “Delta” (dir. Kornél Mundruczó, Hungary, 2008), “De Ofrivilliga“ (dir. Ruben Östlund, Sweeden, 2008) and other titles.
SKALVIJA yearly meets over 58 000 spectators and organises more than 1200 screenings.
The cinema is a member of two networks – Europa Cinemas and CICEA.
SKALVIJA contributes significantly to the diversity of film culture in Lithuania while organising international events. Vilnius Documentary Film Festival , Young Filmmakers Film Festival „Vilnius Film Shorts“ (www.shorts.lt), Russian Film Days have become important occasions not only for film-goers but also for the Lithuanian film industry. Film programmes are usually accompanied by workshops, master classes, lectures and seminars with film professionals from Lithuania and abroad.
SKALVIJA is very keen on providing young people with an opportunity to learn more about film and filmmaking. Education is one of the key activities at SKALVIJA. Each year, different courses on scriptwriting, directing, editing and film history are organised, classroom activities are complemented by week-long outdoor filmmaking workshops.
With the establishment of Skalvija Film Academy in 2007, 14-18 year-old youth started their filmmaking classes. The Academy is a long-term (1 to 2 years) hands-on workshop taking place twice a week. Students can choose from three different study programmes – feature film, documentary film, film theory and analysis. Young filmmakers are guided and consulted by film professionals, and their results are screened publicly in the cinema.
The management team of SKALVIJA is open for any kind of cooperation with other cinemas, distributors, producers, project managers, or people who are passionately in love with film. If you are interested to do something together, please do not hesitate to contact us.
